Steytlerville is a small town in the little Karoo 164 kilometres to the North West of Port Elizabeth. The town is situated to the north of the Baviaanskloof Mountains in the Baviaans Municipality. Steytlerville was established in 1876 by the Dutch Reformed Church on the Farm Doorspoort and was named after the local priest the Rev A.I. Steytler. A proviso in establishing the town was that no alcohol be served in the towns limits so all the hotels and liquor outlets were built just beyond these boundaries.
The area around Steytlerville abounds with farm stays, hunting reserves, private game reserves and has many outdoor activities. The landscape is very varied and very dramatic with Cockscombe serving as a landmark over a wide area.
