Transkaroo Adventures

Since 1993 Transkaroo Adventures have offered tourists and youth groups a unique opportunity to experience the most breathtaking and surprising scenes in the Upper Karoo.

Transkaroo is situated about 750 km from Johannesburg and Cape Town – on the N10 route between Middelburg Eastern Cape and Hanover in the Northern Cape on the N10 route. It is placed under the Noupoort area.

Farm style accommodation is offered in restored farm houses that are all suited for self catering farm holidays or overnight stays. The two farm houses( fully equipped) and overnight huts (for hikers, 4 x 4 visitor etc ) can accommodate up to 14 guests per facility. Safe, undercover parking is available at Rietpoor and Wilgefontein (in big barns) . Farm style B&B at Bovlei for 3 people in a fully equipped flat. Braai facilities, tennis court and other farm activities available to you. Swimming pool, horse rides etc.

Bovlei Bed & Breakfast Accommodation

Bovlei offers:

Rietpoort Holiday Farm House

  • Double bathroom and ablution blocks with showers and toilets
  • Available with or without bedding
  • Safe and secure parking in the barn
  • Experience the tranquility of farm life and stillness only the Karoo can create
  • Surrounded by majestic mountains, fresh water streams and Karoo Fynbos!

 Wilgefontein Holiday Farm house

  • A very big farm house, fully equipped - can accommodate up to 14 people
  • No electricity
  • Gas fridge, lights, stove
  • Double bathroom
  • Available with or without bedding
  • Secure under roof parking
  • Braai facilities. Wood provided
  • Safe parking in barn.

 Off-road trails, Hiking and Mountain Biking

4×4 Trail enthusiasts and mountain bikers can enjoy trails of up to 65km on various terrain such as mountain, plain and valleys.

Hikers can walk up to 42 km through mountains, valleys and plateaus. These routes include one day, two day and three day trails that are regularly used by hiking clubs from all around South Africa. As you enjoy your walk, you will find typical Karoo veld so enjoyed by nature lovers.

A wide variety of bird life, mammals and flora can be seen. On day one, you will see a breeding pair of African Black Eagles. Unique rock formations are also seen all around. Most popular times to hike : March, April , May, September and October. For the winter hiker - June and July.

Route maps and other information are made available to every visitor. Routes are clearly marked, enabling the hikers to walk or ride or drive to all points on the map by themselves.

From Bloemfontein

From Colesberg take the N9 towards Noupoort
Take first side road to Noupoort
There are rugby fields on both sides of the road - keep straight ahead
Cross the railway bridge
± 1 km – road turns to the right – stay on tar road
You will see Hanover/Cape Town/De Aar road signs (If You see these signs, you are on the correct road)
Tar road becomes gravel road – continue straight
± 20 km on gravel road you will cross a tar road – this is the N10 (Please keep a look out for this road as the road signs are inadequate!)
Cross over the N10
Transkaroo is about  3,5 km from N10
Pass the first farm on the left (leeukop)
Turn off to the next farm (Bovlei) - Lindo and Elmarie van der Merwe – Transkaroo Adventures. Please obtain your keys from the main house.

From Cape Town

From the N1 near Hanover take the N10 towards Middelburg
Follow the N10 for about 50km on the tar road until you see a turn off to the right to Leeupoort with a brown "Transkaroo" sign
Transkaroo is about  3,5 km from N10
Pass the first farm on the left (leeukop)
Turn off to the next farm (Bovlei) - Lindo and Elmarie van der Merwe – Transkaroo Adventures. Please obtain your keys from the main house.

From Middelburg

Take the N9 towards Noupoort
Turn left onto the N10 (Hanover/De Aar)
About 20 km along the N10 is a road to the left to Leeupoort with a brown "Transkaroo" sign
Transkaroo is about  3,5 km from N10
Pass the first farm on the left (leeukop)
Turn off to the next farm (Bovlei) - Lindo and Elmarie van der Merwe – Transkaroo Adventures. Please obtain your keys from the main house.
