Disney’s - Saving Mr Banks

Does Mary Poppins bring back fond childhood memories?

Saving Mr Banks is the untold backstory of how Disney’s classic Mary Poppins made it to the screen, Walt Disney’s (Tom Hanks) daughters begged him to make a movie of their favourite book, Mary Poppins. However, author PL Travers (Emma Thompson) did not want Disney to make this movie as she was vehemently opposed to animation.

20 years later, and in his quest to obtain the rights to make the movie, Disney comes up against the uncompromising author, who has no intention of allowing her beloved English nanny come up against the Hollywood machine.

Wooed by Disney’s magic, Travers travels to Los Angeles and Disney pulls out all the stops to impress Travers. However the prickly author doesn’t budge and become increasingly immovable.

It is only when Disney follows Travers back to England and opens up about his own past that Travers finally relents and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Saving Mr Banks will be screened at the John Rupert Theatre on Saturday, 19 July at 2pm.

Doors open at 1.30pm and tickets are available at the door at R10 each.
