To begin with Port Alfred was two separate towns. Those who settled on the west bank named their settlement Port Kowie and those on the east bank Port Frances. Following the visit in 1860 of Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria’s son, the name of both settlements was changed to in his honour.
Today, Port Alfred has become a major tourist destination as it offers so much. There is a large marina where the Kowie River debouches into the ocean, offering great sailing opportunities.
The river and the long stretches of sandy beach offer every possible opportunity for those who love the water.
Inland are to be found some of South Africa's very best game reserves, great scenery and all the history of this formerly strife-torn border area.
