Schanskraal, which lies on the northern slopes of the 2,504 m high Sneeuberg mountain range, occupies some 13,000 hectares of outstanding natural beauty, located some 97 kilometres from Graaff Reinet and 52 kilometres from Nieu Bethesda. It is located in a malaria free area and the climate allows it to be enjoyed all year round.
At Schanskraal, where we farm cattle and sheep, there is a unique and diverse eco system with many indigenous plants, abundant birdlife including Black, Martial and Fish Eagles and animal species including Kudu, Leopard, Gemsbok, Springbok, Blesbok, Zebra, Klipspringer, Caracal, Jackal, Steenbok, Aardwolf and Baboon.
The vistas and sheer sense of space here are magnificent and there is a wide and diverse range of activities on offer such as hiking, quadbiking, archery, fishing, canoeing, swimming, bird watching and game viewing, as well as clay target and the best driven wing shooting in South Africa.
At Schanskraal, we offer accommodation at two very different guest houses:-
The Country Manor (4 star, AA Superior) which lies within beautiful landscaped gardens and next to natural ponds, is one of the best examples of Eastern Cape luxury guest house accommodation. It can be fully catered or self-catering and benefits from a conference room facility making it a superb venue for corporate functions, conferences, workshops and product launches.
Experience fine cuisine in the lavish dining room, prepared in the well-equipped and spacious kitchen and enjoy personally selected wines from our private cellar.
For those that wish to dine outside, there is a large terrace set against a landscaped hillside with a natural rock garden and braai (BBQ) area.
Take tea by the pond under the weeping willow with a spectacular view of the mountain beyond or on the trellised veranda which stretches the length of the front of the Manor.
After dinner relax in front of a warm log fire in a luxurious leather chair in the lounge.
Finally retire in spacious comfort to one of our 7 bedrooms, all richly decorated in imported fabrics and each with a luxuriously appointed bathroom.
You can expect down duvets, heated towel rails and under-floor heating throughout.
Burgersrust Lodge (3 star, AA Highly Recommended) is a sympathetically and comfortably restored historic pioneer farmstead offering idyllic self-catering Karoo guest farm accommodation, ideal for the family getaway.
The attractive and spacious sitting room, full of character with its original floorboards,
open fireplace and indoor braai, is a wonderful place to relax.
Adjacent is the farm style kitchen and pantry.
Burgersrust Lodge has five comfortable bedrooms each with its own individual character and two bathrooms.
Expect down-filled duvets and comfortable mattresses. While the Lodge sleeps 12 comfortably, if the need arises we can supply bunk-beds to cater for 14 people.
Paddle your canoe across the lake while enjoyingthe wonderful and diverse birdlife or just stride out and soak up the scenery.
