At the annual Vuna awards ceremony on 15 February 2012 Baviaans Municipality (Willowmore and Steytlerville) won the Vuna for the cleanest towns in South Africa.
Baviaans Municipality competed with all nine provinces in the respective service delivery areas and won the Vuna for the cleanest towns.
The Vunas are awarded to municipalities for excellence in service delivery. Municipalities who go beyond the usual standards to ensure that their communities get excellent services are awarded with these awards.
“It is only as a result of team work that we achieve success in the municipality and on an individual level. Congratulations to the teams on the ground and the casual workers from the Public Works program. Their contributions must not be underestimated”, Vumazonke, said.
The Department of Public Works (EPWP) and Sakha Isizwe’s job creation programs whereby the municipality creates temporary job opportunities on a two weekly basis to the unemployed, contributed greatly to the award. In conjunction with the department, Baviaans municipality has created more than 2500 temporary job opportunities, according to its Annual Report. The casual workers’ tasks include street sweeping and cleaning.
The aim of the Vuna awards is to motivate municipalities to enhance their productivity and performance; to find creative ways to increase their municipal sustainability and to encourage municipalities to be more committed in service delivery.
It is an initiative of the Department of Local Government in association with their partners, the Development Bank of South Africa, the National Institute for Productivity and the South African Local Government Association.
